With work begun by the French in 1881 and completed by the Americans in 1914, the Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, allowing ships to avoid the long, treacherous Cape Horn route around the tip of South America. As a tourist, this was the view I had – a wire fence with ships loaded with containers drifting by.
